๐Ÿ“– The Passage

Romans 5:6-11 (WEB) For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a righteous person someone would even dare to die. But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from Godโ€™s wrath through him. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life. Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Points

1. Christ Died for the Ungodly

At just the right time, while we were still weak, Christ died for the ungodly. Human love might barely die for a righteous person, but God demonstrates His own love in that Christ died for people who were neither good nor seeking Him. Sproul calls this the defining measure of divine love.

2. Love Proven, Not Asserted

Paul does not ask us to take God's love on assertion alone. He points to the cross as the demonstration: 'God commends His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.' The depth of our sin does not weaken this love; it is precisely the reason it is so astonishing.

3. Much More โ€” Saved from Wrath

If Christ died for us when we were enemies, how much more, now that we are justified, shall we be saved from wrath through Him. The logic is a fortiori: the harder act is already done. The cross guarantees that no justified sinner will ever face the wrath of God.

4. Reconciled, Now Saved by His Life

We were reconciled to God through the death of His Son โ€” and we shall be saved by His life. The resurrection is not an epilogue; the risen Christ is presently our living intercessor. The One who died for us now lives to keep us.

5. Boasting in God

Not only this, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. The final fruit of justification is not merely peace or hope, but joy in God Himself. Reconciliation turns an enemy into a worshiper.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Questions

  1. Romans 5:7 says someone might rarely die for a righteous person, but Christ died for us while we were sinners. What does this tell you about how God's love differs from human love?
  2. Paul argues from the greater to the lesser: if Christ died for us as enemies, will He not keep us as friends? Do you ever live as though God's acceptance could be revoked? Why or why not?
  3. 'We rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ.' Is your Christianity marked by rejoicing in God Himself, or mainly by relief at escaping punishment? What is the difference?
Christ did not wait for you to be lovely before He loved you. He loved you at your worst โ€” and He does not stop at your worst.
