๐Ÿ“– The Passage

Romans 6:4-11 (WEB) We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will also be part of his resurrection; knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be in bondage to sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. But if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him; knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no more has dominion over him! For the death that he died, he died to sin one time; but the life that he lives, he lives to God. Thus consider yourselves also to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Points

1. Union with Christ in death and resurrection

Through baptism we were buried with Christ and raised with him โ€” just as he was raised through the Father's glory, we are to walk in newness of life.

2. Our old man crucified

Our old self was crucified with Christ so the body of sin might be done away with; we are no longer in bondage to sin.

3. Death frees from sin

He who has died is freed from sin's claim; Christ died no more and death no longer has dominion over him โ€” he died to sin once, and now lives to God.

4. A call to reckon yourself dead to sin

Sproul's emphasis is practical: 'consider yourselves' (reckon) to be dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus โ€” a daily, willful orientation, not just a one-time fact.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Questions

  1. How does the image of burial and resurrection shape how you think about daily holiness โ€” as something you strive for or as something you live out of an accomplished reality?
  2. In what ways do you still 'reckon' yourself alive to sin (treating old habits as though you still have the right to indulge them), and how can you consciously 'consider yourself dead' to them this week?
You're no longer a slave โ€” live out the freedom you already have.
