๐Ÿ“– The Passage

Romans 9:1-5 (WEB) I tell the truth in Christ. I am not lying, my conscience testifying with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brothersโ€™ sake, my relatives according to the flesh, who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service, and the promises; of whom are the fathers, and from whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God, blessed forever. Amen.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Points

1. Paul's unmatched anguish

Paul's grief over his fellow Israelites' rejection of Christ is unparalleled in Scripture. He says he could wish himself accursed โ€” cut off from Christ โ€” for their sake, showing the depth of his love for his countrymen.

2. Great sorrow, not indifference

This pain is genuine and unceasing. Paul is not detached; his heart aches because those he loves most by blood are the ones who have refused the Messiah.

3. Israel's covenant privileges

Israel held the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the law, the worship service, and the promises. These were extraordinary privileges โ€” and yet possession of them did not save them or guarantee faith.

4. Christ came from Israel, yet was rejected

From Israel's fathers came Christ according to the flesh. The one from whom Christ descended was God over all, blessed forever โ€” making Israel's rejection of him all the more tragic.

5. The devastating consequence of rejecting Christ

Sproul emphasizes that rejecting Christ carries devastating consequences for anyone who does so. Privilege and descent from the fathers do not override the need for faith in the Messiah.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Questions

  1. How does Paul's love for his countrymen show what true love for those who reject the gospel looks like?
  2. What does Israel's covenant privilege teach us about the difference between religious standing and saving faith?
  3. Why is it so sobering that Christ himself came 'according to the flesh' from the people who rejected him?
May we receive Christ with the same wholeheartedness that Paul longs for in his kin, and never take the gospel for granted.
