πŸ“– The Passage

Romans 14:14-18 (WEB) I know, and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean of itself; except that to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Yet if because of food your brother is grieved, you walk no longer in love. Don’t destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. Then don’t let your good be slandered, for God’s Kingdom is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.

πŸ”‘ Key Points

1. Nothing Is Unclean in Itself

Paul writes with apostolic certainty β€” not a guess, but what Christ revealed to him. Food and drink carry no intrinsic uncleanness. God's dietary laws were purposive: given for a season to mark Israel out as a holy nation, then abrogated in Christ without any compromise of His unchanging character. Adultery and murder are inherently evil; a cut of meat is not.

2. To Him Who Considers It Unclean, It Is Unclean

If I believe something is sin, then doing it is sin for me β€” not because the thing itself is evil, but because I have acted against my conscience. As Luther said at Worms, to act against conscience is neither right nor safe.

3. Not 'Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide'

This is not Jiminy Cricket theology. Consciences can be seared, distorted, and darkened β€” Jeremiah's people had 'the forehead of a harlot,' no longer able to blush. A quiet conscience does not make an act righteous; Scripture, not feeling, must inform the conscience.

4. Do Not Destroy Your Brother for Food

The strong must not parade their freedom in front of the scrupulous. 'You are no longer walking in love' when your liberty grieves a brother for whom Christ died. Bend over backwards so that your good is not spoken of as evil β€” without ever selling out the gospel itself.

5. The Kingdom Is Righteousness, Peace, and Joy

The kingdom of God is not eating, drinking, or any outward trivia. It is righteousness (the pursuit of sanctification, not mere spirituality), true peace (not the carnal peace of cowards who fear every conflict), and joy in the Holy Spirit. Mature Christians major in the majors and refuse to tear the church apart over minors.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Questions

  1. Where have I let a matter of Christian liberty become a test of someone else's faith β€” or a badge of my own maturity?
  2. Is there anything I do that I secretly believe is wrong? That is the one place my liberty is not free to go.
  3. How can I pursue righteousness, peace, and joy in a way that builds up the weaker brother rather than grieving him?
Freedom in Christ is real β€” and it is safest, and most joyful, when it is spent on love rather than defended.
