Indeed you bear the name of a Jew, and rest on the law, and glory in God,
and know his will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,
and are confident that you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,
a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babies, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth.
You therefore who teach another, don't you teach yourself? You who preach that a man shouldn't steal, do you steal?
You who say a man shouldn't commit adultery. Do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
You who glory in the law, do you dishonor God by disobeying the law?
For "the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,"
just as it is written.
For circumcision indeed profits, if you are a doer of the law, but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
If therefore the uncircumcised keep the ordinances of the law, won't his uncircumcision be accounted as circumcision?
Won't the uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfills the law, judge you, who with the letter and circumcision are a transgressor of the law?
For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh;
but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not from men, but from God.

1. The Danger of Religious Hypocrisy
Paul confronts the Jewish reader who teaches the law but breaks it. Resting on religious privilege, boasting in God's law, and instructing others means nothing if you do not practice what you preach. God holds those with greater knowledge to a higher standard, not a lower one.
2. God's Name Is Blasphemed Because of Us
When believers live hypocritically, it causes unbelievers to blaspheme God's name. Our inconsistent witness gives the world grounds to dismiss Christianity. Sproul reminds us: unbelievers will blaspheme God anyway, but we must never give them added ammunition through our hypocrisy.
3. The Law as a Mirror
The law is God's mirror — it reveals every blemish in our lives and reflects His perfect holiness. We cannot hide from what the law shows us. This is why the law serves as a schoolmaster that drives us to Christ; we must feel the weight of the law to grasp the need for the gospel.
4. Outward Signs vs. Inward Reality
Circumcision profits only if you keep the law; if you break it, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. True circumcision is of the heart — by the Spirit, not the letter. Likewise, baptism, church membership, and Christian heritage do not save. Only the inward reality of faith in the heart matters before God.
5. Justification by Faith Alone
God looks on the heart, not outward appearances. No external rite — not circumcision, not baptism, not catechism — can save. Salvation comes through faith and faith alone. We must possess the spiritual reality to which the signs point, or they remain empty shells.
