πŸ“– The Passage

Romans 3:1-9 (WEB) Then what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the profit of circumcision? Much in every way! Because first of all, they were entrusted with the revelations of God. For what if some were without faith? Will their lack of faith nullify the faithfulness of God? May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, β€œthat you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment.” But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? I speak like men do. May it never be! For then how will God judge the world? For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? Why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), β€œLet’s do evil, that good may come?” Those who say so are justly condemned. What then? Are we better than they? No, in no way. For we previously warned both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.

πŸ”‘ Key Points

1. The Privilege of the Oracles

The Jews' great advantage was receiving God's Word. Privilege brings responsibility, not exemption from judgment.

2. Human Faithlessness Cannot Nullify God's Faithfulness

Our unbelief does not cancel God's covenant promises. He remains true even when every man is a liar.

3. God Is Righteous in His Wrath

Sproul emphasizes that God's judgment is not a character flaw but a necessary expression of His perfect righteousness.

4. The Slanderous Objection Refuted

Evil is never justified by good outcomes. Those who reason "let us sin so grace may abound" are justly condemned.

5. All Are Under Sin

No one stands morally superior before God. This universal guilt sets the stage for the gospel of free grace.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Questions

  1. In what ways does human unfaithfulness actually magnify God's faithfulness rather than diminish it?
  2. Why is God's wrath not an emotional reaction but a necessary expression of His righteousness?
  3. How does the truth that "all are under sin" level the playing field and make grace truly gracious?
God's judgment is not bad news β€” it is the guarantee that justice will prevail, making His mercy all the more precious.
