Romans 8:1-9 (WEB)
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don't walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.
For what the law couldn't do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh;
that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace;
because the mind of the flesh is hostile towards God; for it is not subject to God's law, neither indeed can it be.
Those who are in the flesh can't please God.
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn't have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.
๐ Key Points
1. No condemnation for those in Christ
The 'therefore' of verse 1 draws its force from all of chapters 1โ7: because sin and death have been dealt with, there is now no condemnation for anyone in Christ Jesus. This is the gospel headline Sproul opens with.
2. Two competing 'laws'
The law of sin and death held humanity in bondage โ a principle, not a statute, operating in fallen nature. But the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus sets believers free from that bondage. The Spirit is not merely an option; He is the source of new life.
3. God did what the law could not
The law could diagnose sin but was 'weak through the flesh' to conquer it. God sent His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and condemned sin in the flesh, so the righteous requirement of the law is fulfilled in us who walk by the Spirit.
4. Two opposite mindsets
Living by the flesh means setting the mind on the things of the flesh โ a mind hostile to God, incapable of subjecting itself to God's law. Living by the Spirit means a mind oriented toward God, which produces life and peace.
5. The indwelling Spirit as the mark of the Spirit-filled life
You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if the Spirit of God dwells in you; anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ is not his. The presence of the Spirit is both the guarantee and the power of the new life.
