📖 The Passage

Romans 8:9-17 (WEB) But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his. If Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God. For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God; and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

🔑 Key Points

1. The test of safety: the indwelling Spirit

Sproul opens by asking, “Is it safe?” — are we safe from God’s wrath? Your standing is not decided by church membership or good deeds, but by whether the Spirit of Christ dwells in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

2. Body and spirit under Christ in you

If Christ is in you, the body is still dead because of sin (we are still mortal), but the human spirit is alive because of the righteousness we have in Christ. And the same God who raised Jesus from the dead will one day give life to our mortal bodies.

3. Put sin to death — by the Spirit

We are debtors to the flesh, not to live after it. The Spirit does not promise a sinless life, but a new pattern: by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, and you will live. That ongoing struggle against sin is pastoral counsel, not a verdict of unbelief.

4. “Led by the Spirit” means led to holiness

Against the common jargon of “led by the Spirit” as specific decisions (job, spouse, move), Sproul says the biblical sense is the Spirit inclining your heart toward righteousness — God’s will for you is your sanctification (1 Thess 4:3). If you are led by the Spirit, that is the sure sign you are a son of God.

5. Adoption: crying “Abba, Father!”

We did not receive a spirit of bondage to fear, but the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God — and if children, then heirs, joint heirs with Christ, suffering and glorified with him.

💬 Discussion Questions

  1. Sproul says the biblical meaning of “led by the Spirit” is being inclined toward holiness, not specific direction for decisions. How does that reframe how you ask God for guidance in everyday choices?
  2. Paul calls believers debtors — not to the flesh, but to live by the Spirit. What is one practical way you can “put to death the deeds of the body” this week?
  3. Do you find it easier to pray “Abba, Father” in freedom or in fear? What does the Spirit’s testimony in your spirit say about your identity as a child of God?
Your safety is not in your performance but in the One who lives in you — rest in that Spirit, and let him lead you home.
