๐Ÿ“– The Passage

Romans 8:28 (WEB) We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Points

1. No Ultimate Tragedies

Suffering and even what feels like tragedy are real, but because God sovereignly works all things together, there are no ultimate tragedies for the Christian.

2. The Promise Is Certain

'We know' โ€” not hope or wish โ€” because the promise rests on God's sovereign purpose, not on our limited sight of how things work out.

3. 'Good' Means Ultimate Good

The good God brings is ultimate and eternal blessedness, not the immediate absence of pain. Even deep sorrows are appointed for our final good.

4. The Ground Is Our Love

The promise belongs to those who love God and are called according to His purpose โ€” our confidence in this verse flows from our union with Christ, not our circumstances.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Questions

  1. Is there a current hardship in your life where you are trusting God to bring ultimate good out of it? How does Romans 8:28 change how you see it?
  2. What is the difference between saying 'everything happens for a reason' and saying 'God works all things together for the good of those who love Him'?
  3. Why does Sproul stress that there are no ultimate tragedies for believers? How does that hope sustain us in the middle of suffering?
Whatever you are walking through today, the God who works all things together is not absent โ€” He is bringing ultimate good to those who love Him.
