πŸ“– The Passage

Romans 13:8-14 (WEB) Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, β€œYou shall not commit adultery,” β€œYou shall not murder,” β€œYou shall not steal,” β€œYou shall not covet,” and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, β€œYou shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love doesn’t harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law. Do this, knowing the time, that it is already time for you to awaken out of sleep, for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed. The night is far gone, and the day is near. Let’s therefore throw off the deeds of darkness, and let’s put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and lustful acts, and not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts.

πŸ”‘ Key Points

1. A Debt You Never Finish Paying

You can clear every debt to the bank, the store, and the credit card company β€” but the debt of love is never discharged this side of heaven. Paul is not forbidding borrowing here; he is naming the one perpetual obligation laid on us by the Great Commandment: love your neighbor as yourself.

2. Love Fulfills the Law, It Doesn't Set It Aside

Against Joseph Fletcher's situation ethics, which reduced everything to 'do what love requires in each situation,' Sproul insists love never requires adultery, theft, or slander. Augustine's 'Love God and do as you please' means that if you truly love God, what pleases you will be what pleases Him β€” and His law tells you what that is.

3. The Universal Neighborhood

Scripture does not teach the universal brotherhood of man β€” brotherhood belongs to those adopted in Christ. But it does teach a universal neighborhood: every human being is your neighbor, as the good Samaritan shows. Love does no harm, so it refuses adultery, murder, theft, false witness, and coveting β€” and especially the 'let me tell you something in love' slander that carries a knife in the dark.

4. Know the Time β€” Wake Up

'Our salvation is nearer than when we first believed' is not bad news, it is good news: sōzō runs through every tense β€” you were saved, you are being saved, you shall be saved. The fullness of salvation arrives at glorification, and every passing hour brings it closer. The night is far spent; the day is at hand. Live alert, not asleep.

5. Put On Christ β€” Make No Provision for the Flesh

Cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light, which is Christ Himself. 'Make no provision' comes from the root of providence: stop supplying the flesh with opportunity. As Luther put it, you cannot stop the birds from flying near your head, but you need not let them nest in your hair. That text β€” Romans 13:13-14 β€” is the very word Augustine read in the garden ('tolle lege') when God converted him.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Questions

  1. Love is the fulfillment of the law β€” but have you ever used 'love' as an excuse to bend a clear command of God? Where does that show up in your life?
  2. Paul says to make no provision for the flesh. Where are you currently 'tying your horse in front of the saloon' β€” what one deliberate step could you take this week to stop supplying a temptation?
  3. If the fullness of your salvation is genuinely nearer today than yesterday, how would that change the way you spend this week β€” your attention, your habits, your hope?
The night is far spent and the day is at hand β€” put on Christ today, and let every hour bring you closer to the fullness of a salvation that is already yours.
